HM Submarine E3 left Harwich on 16th October 1914 to patrol in the North Sea off the German island of Borkum. On 18th October she was spotted on the surface, probably re-charging her batteries, by the German submarine U-27 which fired two torpedoes at a range of about 300 yards. One of these hit the target and the explosion broke E3 in half after which she sank. This was the first successful attack of one submarine on another and there were no survivors. One of those who died was Frederick Edroff. |
